OVERVIEW
What is a cash drawer? A cash drawer provides a means of temporarily storing cash during and between POS transactions. APG's cash drawers are constructed of sturdy steel, utilize durable drawer slides, and come equipped with a four function lock.
How do I use my cash drawer? A cash drawer will open when properly connected to a host device such as a computer or Point of Sale receipt printer capable of supporting a cash drawer. The drawer may also include a means of reporting its status, opened or closed, back to the host device. A till is also included inside the drawer. The till has divided areas for separating various bill and coin denominations and other types of transaction media. Your cash drawer can rest on a counter top and act as a foundation for other POS equipment (including monitor, receipt printer, and keyboard). It can also be mounted under the counter with APG's Under Counter Mounting Brackets. This can free up additional counter space.
How do I use the media slots and
media storage area?
Many styles of APG drawers include slots in the front of the drawer and space below the till inside the drawer to store various types of transaction media. Software may be written to take advantage of this feature by disabling the opening signal to the cash drawer when a non-cash transaction is taking place.
How should I use/manage my cash drawer keys? Each cash drawer is shipped with two keys on a ring for the user's convenience. Keys are intended typically for the store manager(s) to enhance security. APG recommends the removal of the key from the lock in normal operation. Leaving the key in the lock allows the possibility of the key being broken off in the lock.
What are the four lock functions?
How can they be utilized?
  1. locked closed - cash drawer may not be opened by an electrical signal from the host device. Use this when it is necessary to be away from the drawer for only a short period.
  2. online (opens electronically) - normal operating orientation of the key when the drawer is driven by the host device.
  3. manual open - allows manual access to the contents of the cash drawer.
  4. locked open - cash drawer cannot be latched closed. Use when the retail environment is closed and the contents of the cash drawer have been removed. The cash drawer is a less-attractive target when it is left open and empty its contents removed.
SOFTWARE
What drivers are available for my cash drawer? APG provides no drivers for cash drawers that connect to printers. Refer to the printer manufacturer for drivers for the cash drawer device.

The APG website provides OPOS-drivers and demonstration utilities for various direct PC-connect interfaces. See the Software Drivers section for the latest, most up-to-date information and utilities.
What are OPOS drivers and how do I use them? For OPOS-compliant applications, the user must configure and specify a device name for the cash drawer during installation. Consult the OPOS documentation for additional assistance.
Which cash drawers are OPOS/UPOS compliant? APG's OPOS Application Developer's Kit supports the following models:
  • Model 182 ParallelPRO™ Interface
  • Model 212A Smart SerialPRO® Interface
  • Model 484A SerialPRO® II Interface
  • Model 554 HID-compliant USBPro Interface

Many other legacy direct PC-connect interfaces may also be supported by these OPOS drivers. Contact APG Technical Support for additional assistance for your specific application.

OPOS drivers for printer driven drawers are available from the printer manufacturer.
Does APG have JPOS drivers for my cash drawer? Yes. APG has JPOS drivers for IBM Java and Sun Java for many of its direct PC-connect interfaces. Download them from our Software Drivers page.
Can I get Visual Basic code examples to open my cash drawer? Contact the APG Technical Support Team for assistance.
Where do I put the cash drawer opening code in my software? Consult the software documentation. Typically, the opening code is placed in a field or series of fields under a Configuration, Utilities, or Setup portion of a software package.
ELECTRICAL
How can I test to make sure my Model 212A cash drawer is working independently of my POS software? To open your drawer using DOS, BASIC, or Visual Basic, follow the instructions on page 2 of your "Model 212A Smart SerialPRO® Interface User's Guide". You should have received a copy of the User's Guide with your cash drawer or download:

How can I configure my Model 212A cash drawer to report the opened/closed status? The cash drawer can be configured to report drawer status on Clear To Send (CTS) or Ring Indicator (RI). See the "Model 212A Smart SerialPRO® Interface User's Guide" page 3, Figure 4. You should have received a copy of the User's Guide with your cash drawer or download:
Smart SerialPRO® Programmable Serial User's Guide PDF Smart SerialPRO® Programmable Serial User's Guide

How do I connect the DB-25 female connector on my 212A cable to the DB-9 male serial port connector on my computer? APG provides a port adapter with the cash drawer that changes cable from a 25-pin to a 9-pin connector. For pinout information on that adapter, download:
Smart SerialPRO® Programmable Serial User's Guide PDF Smart SerialPRO® Programmable Serial User's Guide

Can I share the port driving my PC-connect cash drawer with other serial devices? 484A Serial Interface - No. The 484 interface is intended to be the only device on the serial, RS-232 communication port.

212A Serial Interface - Yes. A Y-cable is included with the drawer. Configure the drawer to open on a specific ASCII character. Connect the second device into the AUX device connector on the cash drawer cable and allow device to control all hardware handshake functions by removing all jumpers on jumper header J1. Set the 2nd drawer to open on a different character. See the User's Guide for more information.

182 Parallel Interface - Yes. A Y-cable is included with the drawer. Set cash drawer DIP switches to shared port mode: DIP switch bank A switch #1 to OFF position. Connect the second device into the AUX device connector on the cash drawer cable. Set the 2nd drawer to open on a different character. See the User's Guide for more information.
Does the 182 parallel cash drawer provide open/closed status to the PC? No.
My 182 parallel interface cash drawer shares a port with a laser printer. Why does the cash drawer fail to open consistently? In some instances, the printer driver for laser printers can interfere with the data communication directed to the parallel port by a software application to open the cash drawer. In those situations, it may be best to separate the printer from the cash drawer and operate each on their own parallel port.
How can I make one cash drawer work with multiple PCs/host devices? While on the surface this may seem to be an attractive option, there are inherent cash management concerns when several cashiers share a cash drawer.

Serial or Parallel Interface Cash Drawer
  • With multiple PCs connected on a network in a Windows environment, configure the drawer as a Generic/Text Only printer on the PC supporting the drawer. "Print" the opening commands from the other PCs to the cash drawer.
  • Connect the drawer to an IP node (e.g. HP Jet Direct External Print Server) and connect the IP node device to the Ethernet network.
How can I configure two printer-connect cash drawers on my point of sale printer?
  • Many point of sale receipt printers have the ability to open two cash drawers. APG offers the cable kits needed to do this. Contact our sales or technical support team for more information.
  • In many cases, a point of sale receipt printers can open two cash drawer but can only sense the open/closed state of one drawer. Consult the printer documentation or contact the APG technical support team for more information.
What is my cash drawer opening code? POS software programs must generate a series of ASCII characters to open the cash drawer. Different cash drawer configurations require different opening codes.

a) Printer-driven
The cash drawer opening sequence is printer specific. Refer to your printer manufacturer's documentation for opening sequence. Some test examples are shown below:

Sample Opening Code for ESC/POS® compliant printer in Visual Basic
The first step in enabling RS-232 serial communication in Visual Basic is to install the Microsoft COM ActiveX control into the Components Toolbar then add MSCOMM to the form.
Sample code:
MSComm1.CommPort = 1 ' Define COM1 as port to be opened
MSComm1.PortOpen = True ' Open the serial port
MSComm1.Settings = "9600,n, 8,1" ' Define the communication parameters per printer specifications
MSComm1.Output = CHR$(27) & CHR$(112) & CHR$(48) & CHR$(40) & CHR$(40)
